The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, went on record to deny allegations of collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine his party. In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Damagum reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP and dismissed claims that he was working with the APC. He made it clear that he has been a member of the PDP since 1999 and has never defected to another party, emphasizing his commitment to the ideals of the PDP.
Relationship with Nyesom Wike and Criticism
Damagum also addressed criticism from some party members regarding his relationship with former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. He acknowledged their association but denied any wrongdoing, stating, “For all those who accuse me of having links with the Minister of FCT, I know him or have had links with him, and many of them have had links with him. My only fault here is that I did not allow them to do what they wanted with him.” Despite facing backlash from some within the party, Damagum stood by his ties with Wike and reiterated his dedication to the PDP.
Defections and Internal Divisions
The PDP chairman expressed disappointment over the defection of some party members to the APC, describing it as a loss. He emphasized the need for unity within the party and acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in any political organization. Damagum defended his leadership style, claiming that he adheres to principles and does not succumb to individual pressures. He acknowledged that there are internal problems within the PDP, as is common in any political party, but maintained that the party remains united despite these challenges.
