Rangers NPFL Title Defence in Jeopardy: Coach Ilechukwu Faces Uphill Battle
Rangers International coach Fidelis Ilechukwu is coming to terms with the harsh reality of their waning chances to defend their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title. With a significant 11-point gap separating them from league leaders Remo Stars after 22 games, their prospects are looking uncertain.
Despite a recent 2-0 victory over Ikorodu City that ended a two-game losing streak and lifted them to fourth place, Ilechukwu remains cautious about their championship aspirations. The goals from veteran striker Godwin Obaje (45’) and Saviour Isaac (90’) provided a much-needed boost for the team.
Having previously expressed confidence in their ability to chase the title, Ilechukwu’s tone has shifted to reflect a more somber outlook. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “The league title looks somehow difficult because my friend (Ogunmodede) is serious about it. I think for now the league is between Remo Stars, 3SC, and Enyimba. Rangers are struggling, and I don’t want the players under pressure or the fans to start complaining, but we are very confident.”
As reigning champions who clinched the title last season with 70 points, narrowly edging out Remo Stars, Rangers are facing an uphill battle to retain their crown. Their upcoming fixtures include a crucial away match against Bayelsa United followed by a home showdown against title contenders Remo Stars.
Kano Pillars Strengthen Squad with New Signings
Meanwhile, as the NPFL mid-season transfer window closed, Kano Pillars made significant moves to bolster their squad for the second half of the 2024/25 season. The team announced the addition of six new players, aiming to enhance their performance in the upcoming matches.
In a bid to fortify their defence, Kano Pillars secured the services of Dawud Ibrahim from Kebbi United and Uzogara Kennedy from Rivers United, bringing much-needed stability to their backline. On the attacking front, Eshimitu Gomino Eya (FRSC), Hadi Mohammed Olarewanju (Bayelsa United), and the returning forward Jerry Alex (Mosta FC, Senglea FC) are expected to provide additional firepower. Midfielder Ezeh Charles, who previously played for Lillestrøm SK and FK Kom, is set to play a crucial role in orchestrating play in the midfield.
While the team welcomed new faces, they also bid farewell to some players. Usman Aminu Maidubji and Yusuf Abdullahi left on loan deals, while Emmanuel Anaful mutually parted ways with the club. Additionally, striker Abdulmajeed Aminu is on the verge of joining Moneni Pirates in South Africa, signaling a period of transition for the team.
In conclusion, as the NPFL season progresses, Rangers International faces a challenging path to defend their title, while Kano Pillars look to strengthen their squad for the battles ahead in the league. The competition is heating up, and the outcomes remain uncertain, adding to the excitement and anticipation among football fans across the country.
