Strengthening Synergy for National Security
In a bid to tackle the rising wave of violence and insecurity in Nigeria, Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Prof. Noah Yusuf, has emphasized the critical need for improved synergy among security agencies. This call to action was made during a recent one-day capacity building workshop organized by the Centre for Peace and Security Studies of the institution.
Importance of Enhanced Collaboration
During the workshop, aptly tagged “Peace and Conflict Management Capacity Building Retreat”, Prof. Noah highlighted the significance of collaboration and coordination among security agencies in combating insecurity. He stressed that a joint effort is imperative to make a positive impact on the current security challenges, including insurgency.
Prof. Noah commended the presence of various security agencies at the workshop, underscoring the importance of such gatherings for the overall security landscape of the country. He emphasized the necessity of more of these collaborative initiatives to strengthen the nation’s security infrastructure.
Focus on Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution
In addition to advocating for improved synergy, Prof. Noah also emphasized the importance of utilizing alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms in addressing conflicts. The capacity building workshop was designed to enhance the peace skills of post-graduate students and participating security agencies, aiming to contribute to the overall betterment of society.
The program’s objective is to equip students and security personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in peacebuilding activities effectively. It also serves as a platform for sharing fieldwork experiences on peacebuilding, with the goal of promoting security and stability within communities.
Strengthening Partnerships with Security Agencies
Dr. Abdulazeez Adekola, the acting Director of the Centre, highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with Nigerian Security Agencies. The Centre is in the final stages of a partnership arrangement with the Nigeria Police to serve as a resource institution for the Police Intelligence College in Kwara.
This strategic partnership aims to provide training to police personnel on non-kinetic approaches to conflict resolution and security management. Dr. Adekola also noted the successful completion of a two-week community fieldwork by students, a crucial component of their graduation requirements.
In a significant development, the Centre announced its maiden Alumni public lecture, which will be delivered by the IGP Egbetokun Olukayode Adeolu, the first Ph.D. graduating student from the institution in March of this year. This event underscores the commitment to academic excellence and collaboration with key stakeholders in the security sector.
