Two octogenarians, an 80-year-old grandpa Ayuba Ashiru and 82-year-old grandma Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday, alongside her daughter Chisom Uchechi, 32, have found themselves in hot water with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The suspects were apprehended in a series of raids conducted across the country, resulting in the interception of opioids valued at over N3.2bn at both the Apapa seaport in Lagos and Port Harcourt port in Rivers State. According to the NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the arrests took place on specific dates, with Ayuba being caught in Kaduna State on Wednesday, 14th May, where officers found 2.3kgs of skunk in his possession. He admitted to being involved in the illicit drug trade for a whopping 46 years, despite having previously served a 10-year jail term for similar offenses.
Raids in Abia State led to the discovery of methamphetamine, tramadol, and skunk at the residence of Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday and her daughter Chisom Uchechi. The 82-year-old grandmother confessed to taking over the drug business after her son’s passing two years ago. Meanwhile, at the Ports complex in Onne, Rivers State, a significant haul of 3,000,000 pills of tapentadol and carisoprodol royal 225mg worth N2.1bn was seized from a watch-listed container. Additional interceptions were made in Lagos, Kwara, and other states, resulting in the confiscation of various drugs and the arrest of multiple individuals involved in the illicit drug trade. The NDLEA’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse have intensified, with operations extending to different parts of the country to curb the spread of illegal substances and hold perpetrators accountable.
