The Management of Kaduna State University (KASU) just spilled the tea that the school’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) decided to pump the brakes on their strike action, and the varsity is officially back in business. In a press conference held in his office on Thursday, the Vice Chancellor of KASU, Prof Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, spilled the beans that Governor Uba Sani gave the green light for a ₦50 million monthly standing order to support staff welfare. Additionally, the governor put together a squad to hash out how to resolve lingering issues.

The Vice Chancellor also let slip that Governor Uba Sani coughed up N146 million to pay off some past due salaries and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances. On top of that, the Governor signed off on letting the University keep a percentage of its internally generated revenue (IGR) to boost financial independence. Prof Musa couldn’t help but gush, “These moves are not just bold, but they’re like, totally unprecedented in the recent history of the University. Kudos to His Excellency for being so tuned in to the struggles of students, the state of education, and the well-being of the staff.”

Riding on this wave of good vibes, Professor Musa mentioned that a top-tier negotiation team has been put together by the Government to keep the conversation going with all the unions within the university to tackle any loose ends. The Vice Chancellor spilled the beans that the negotiation team is led by the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe, with a bunch of other big shots from the government on board. Prof Musa highlighted that Governor Uba Sani “has really shown he gets it when it comes to the long-standing issues faced by the university staff—some of which have been lingering for over a decade and were passed down from previous administrations.” As the Visitor to the University, the Governor has been showing some serious dedication and leadership in the education sector of the state, addressing the challenges head-on.
