The National Universities Commission (NUC) just dropped some news bombs, granting interim accreditation status to the Hausa language programme at the University of Ilorin. This big reveal came after the NUC did their thing in the accreditation exercise in October/November 2024. Oh, and the Igbo programme from the same Faculty of Arts? Well, it received full accreditation, so that’s pretty cool.
The official word came in a letter dated April 30, 2025, addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN). Signed by the Acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, it was all official and stuff. Out of the 37 academic courses University of Ilorin presented for evaluation, 36 got the full accreditation stamp, with Hausa being the lone ranger with its interim status. So, the Hausa language programme can keep on keeping on while the university gets its ducks in a row for the next round of evaluation.
The Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, spilled the beans in a statement on Tuesday, calling it a “100% accreditation success.” With the Hausa programme getting the interim nod, the university officials were all happy and proud of themselves. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Egbewole, was over the moon about the news, saying it was a long time coming and a pat on the back for all the hard work put in. He thanked everyone involved, from the big shots to the little guys, for making it happen. Now that they’ve hit this milestone, there’s no time to rest on their laurels; they’ve got to keep pushing for excellence. So, cheers to more quality education and higher standards at University of Ilorin!
