FG’s Insecurity Crisis: Drifting Towards Misgovernance
The recent incidents of violence in Northern Nigeria have left communities in Borno and Zamfara States in mourning. The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives in these tragic events. In Borno State, 40 farmers were brutally killed by suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, while in Zamfara State, 16 civilians lost their lives in an airstrike that mistakenly targeted a local vigilance group. These events serve as stark reminders of the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups like Boko Haram and the urgent need for enhanced security measures.
Standing in Solidarity
The CNG extended its heartfelt condolences to the affected families and communities, emphasizing the need for immediate support and assistance from the governments of Borno and Zamfara States. The group called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the Zamfara airstrike to prevent similar tragedies in the future. They also stressed the importance of redoubling efforts to eliminate terrorist groups and bandits in the region through intelligence gathering, community engagement, and modern technology.
Prioritizing Citizen Safety
Amidst growing concerns about insecurity and criminality, the CNG urged both the Federal and State Governments to prioritize the safety and well-being of their citizens. They criticized the government for focusing on controversial tax reforms instead of addressing the pressing security challenges facing the nation. The group emphasized the need for decisive action to protect Nigerians from violence and ensure a future free from fear.
A Call for Accountability
As the nation grapples with escalating insecurity, the CNG called on President Bola Tinubu to address the critical issues of governance and security. They warned against the consequences of neglecting the safety of the people and stressed the importance of holding those responsible for security lapses accountable. The group underscored the collective responsibility of all Nigerians in working towards a peaceful and secure future for the nation.
