Tragedy struck the small community of Sabon-Pegi in Mashegu LGA of Niger State early Sunday morning, as an explosion ripped through the area, claiming the lives of three individuals and leaving multiple others injured. The incident, which occurred around 8 am, has left the community reeling from the devastating aftermath.
According to sources on the ground, the explosion was the result of an explosive device belonging to local miners, which detonated unexpectedly. Among the casualties were a woman, a man, and a young boy, all of whom tragically lost their lives on the spot. In addition to the loss of life, approximately 40 houses were affected, along with several parked vehicles, adding to the chaos and destruction wrought by the blast.
When reached for comment, Abdullah Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the harrowing incident to the Daily Trust. He revealed that the explosive device responsible for the tragedy was housed in a rented apartment by a local artisan miner named Yushehu. While Yushehu himself resides in New Bussa, the rented apartment was utilized for his workers, leading to the catastrophic chain of events.
As rescue efforts continue in the wake of the explosion, NSEMA desk officers from Mashegu and Borgu LGAs are on the scene, conducting thorough assessments to ensure all affected individuals receive the necessary support and aid. Despite these efforts, there are concerns among local sources that the death toll may unfortunately rise, given the severity of injuries sustained by those impacted by the collapse of buildings in the area.
