Telcos Set to Increase Tariffs, FG Warns

In a recent stakeholders’ meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, revealed that telecom tariffs are on the verge of being increased. However, contrary to the MNOs’ proposal of a 100 percent hike, Tijani assured the public that the increase would not be as drastic.

The ongoing consultations and engagements between the government and MNOs are aimed at reaching a consensus on the tariff adjustments. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is expected to approve and unveil the new tariffs to the public in the near future.

### Concerns Over Tariff Increase
Tijani addressed the concerns raised by some companies regarding the need for a significant tariff increase. He emphasized the government’s commitment to striking a balance between protecting consumers and ensuring that companies can continue to invest in the sector.

### Infrastructure Investment
Highlighting the importance of infrastructure investment in the telecommunication sector, Tijani stressed that the Federal Government would no longer rely solely on private companies for such investments. He emphasized the need for the right regulations to foster sector growth and ensure quality service delivery.

### NCC’s Perspective
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, echoed Tijani’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagements for the industry’s sustainability. He reassured Nigerians that the NCC was considering various factors before finalizing the approved tariff increase percentage.

### Industry Response
Represented by Femi Adeniran, Airtel Nigeria’s media spokesperson, CEO Dinesh Balsingh underscored the economic realities driving the proposed tariff adjustments. Rising operational and capital costs have necessitated the need for a tariff increment to ensure the sector’s long-term sustainability and benefit Nigerian consumers.

As the government navigates the delicate balance between consumer protection and industry growth, the impending tariff adjustments in the telecommunication sector will undoubtedly impact millions of Nigerians. Stay tuned for updates on the NCC’s decision and the implications for mobile users across the country.
