Federal University Lokoja (FUL) in Lokoja has officially reopened its doors for academic activities after being closed for three weeks due to a student protest. Dr. Rebecca Okojie, the Registrar and Secretary of Council of the University, announced this news on Monday, highlighting that the university would resume operations on Tuesday, March 11, with lectures set to kick off on Monday, March 17.
The decision to reopen the institution came after an emergency meeting held by the Senate on Monday, March 10. Dr. Okojie noted that the Senate had approved the reopening following ongoing efforts and consultations to address the challenges that led to tragic road accidents resulting in the loss of five students’ lives and severe injuries to others.
Reopening After Tragic Events
The closure of FUL was prompted by a devastating truck accident that claimed the lives of five students, sparking a wave of protests among the student body. Despite interventions from the state government and pleas from university officials, students remained steadfast in their demands for justice, culminating in the blockade of the university gates.
Amid escalating tensions and concerns for safety, the Vice Chancellor, in consultation with university management and security agencies, made the difficult decision to shut down the university indefinitely on February 20. The move was aimed at preventing further loss of life and restoring calm to the campus.
Rebuilding and Moving Forward
In the wake of these tragic events, the reopening of FUL signifies a new chapter for the university community as they navigate the healing process and work towards rebuilding trust and unity. The resumption of academic activities serves as a beacon of hope, signaling a commitment to moving forward from adversity and embracing a spirit of resilience.
As students and faculty return to campus, the focus now shifts towards fostering a safe and supportive environment that prioritizes student welfare and academic excellence. The university community stands united in its resolve to honor the memory of the fallen students while striving to create a brighter future for all who walk its halls.
The Road Ahead
Looking ahead, the reopening of FUL marks a pivotal moment in the university’s history, underscoring the importance of solidarity, compassion, and collective action in times of crisis. As the campus reawakens with the bustle of eager minds and the promise of new beginnings, the spirit of resilience and renewal shines brightly, guiding the way towards a brighter tomorrow.
The journey to recovery may be long and arduous, but with unwavering determination and a shared sense of purpose, the FUL community is poised to emerge stronger and more unified than ever before. Let us honor the past, embrace the present, and forge a future filled with hope, healing, and boundless possibilities.
